Après l'assassinat d'Ali en 661, le frère aîné de Hussain, Hassan, devient calife et deuxième imam. Rapidement, Hassan est cependant contraint d'abdiquer en faveur de Mu'awiya, un puissant chef de clan et rival politique qui instaure le califat des Omeyyades. Si Hussain reconnaît à contrecœur le pouvoir de Mu'awiya, il refuse de lui prêter allégeance.
