Son père était Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin et fidèle de Mahomet, qui devint le quatrième calife musulman et le premier imam de la branche chiite de l'Islam. Les chiites vénèrent Hussain comme leur troisième imam ainsi que comme un martyr. Après l'assassinat d'Ali en 661, le frère aîné de Hussain, Hassan, devient calife et deuxième imam. Rapidement, Hassan est cependant contraint d'abdiquer en faveur de Mu'awiya, un puissant chef de clan et rival politique qui instaure le califat des Omeyyades. Si Hussain reconnaît à contrecœur le pouvoir de Mu'awiya, il refuse de lui prêter allégeance.
